Bamboo vs Cotton: Is Bamboo Overtaking Cotton?

Bamboo vs Cotton: Is Bamboo Overtaking Cotton?

It's common knowledge that when it comes to choosing a natural fibre for clothing, industrial products- etc, Cotton is by far the most popular choice. But what if this was to change for a much better sustainable and eco-friendly material such as Bamboo? Now you may think of Bamboo as a hard, grassy plant that is eaten by pandas in Asia, but it also has a wonderful use for us humans, too!

Here are the benefits to why Bamboo is now becoming a strong competitor to Cotton;

1. Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants in the world

Some bamboo grows to 91 cm (3 feet) within a 24-hour period, a rate of almost 4 cm per hour. If only hair grew that quickly!

Also, this plant will sprout on its own with one acre of bamboo yielding 10 times more than one acre of cotton. Cotton requires copious of water, harvesting and re-planting each year which is more labour intensive.

2. Bamboo is much softer than Cotton

It may be hard to believe that this hard plant can be soft, but once woven it is softer than Cotton! Also, it becomes hypo-allergenic which means it can be worn by anyone without any allergic reactions or skin irritation.

3. Bamboo is wonderful for the planet

Bamboo not only absorbs c02, but it releases more oxygen than most hardwood trees!

4. Bamboo is more absorbent than Cotton

Bamboo has an amazing wicking capability; this plant can absorb three times more water than its weight and is 40% more absorbent than even the finest organic cotton.

5. Bamboo is a fantastic temperature regulator

Last but not least; the Bamboo fabric is ventilated, therefore it traps in cool air in the summer and warm air in the winter to regulate your body temperature. This amazing fibre also has antimicrobial properties to stop smelly bacteria from settling on your skin, allowing you to feel clean, dry and comfortable.

We've used Bamboo in our 'Walkabout' sneakers for the lining, for an itch-free and non-sweat experience. So no need to wear socks!
